Beach-goers spot flares off Eastbourne Pier

RNLI Eastbourne

Holidaymakers on Eastbourne beach, in the UK, spotted flares out at sea, which helped rescuers save the driver of a broken-down speedboat.

Eastbourne’s inshore lifeboat (ILB) was launched one afternoon in April 2017, after repeated 999 calls from concerned members of the public.

They had spotted a cloud of black smoke coming from a boat around a mile off Eastbourne Pier, followed by the firing of red flares.

The volunteer ILB crew was paged by the coastguard and sped to the reported location. It found the speedboat had suffered engine failure and was drifting helplessly in the tide. The lone occupant fired off his distress flares to summon assistance.

The disabled vessel was taken under tow to Sovereign Harbour where it was passed to the marina workboat.
