Flares dropped for night-time search in Canada

A night-time training exercise for Canadian Coast Guards turned into a real search using flares after a life jacket was spotted in the water.

An armed forces public affairs officer said Coast Guards on a training exercise discovered a life jacket in Georgian Bay, near Annan, Ontario, one evening in August.

A Hercules aircraft from the 424 Transport and Rescue Squadron at 8 Wing Trenton dropped around 20 flares so the Coast Guard could continue searching at night, reports the Owen Sound Sun Times.

The crew of the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Cape Providence of Meaford was requested by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton to search the area, but nothing untoward was found and there were no reports of anyone missing.
