Parachute flares used in search for man

Sunderland RNLI search

White parachute flares were used to search the shore one night in August after reports of a man in the water.

An extensive shore line search was carried from Sunderland Marina to Roker Pier by Sunderland's RNLI and Coastguard teams, Northumbria Police, South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade.

RNLI crew in Atlantic 85 & D Class lifeboats set off white parachute flares to help illuminate the areas, while inshore boats searched the piers and harbour areas. A police helicopter was also involved.

A Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team spokesperson says, " During the search our volunteers set off a number of white parachute flares to help illuminate the search area. With no sightings of the person all teams were stood down."
