Public alert coastguard to flares

Many members of the public in Eastbourne, on the UK’s South Coast, alerted the coastguard after seeing red distress flares.

Eastbourne’s inshore lifeboat (ILB) was launched one afternoon in June after multiple reports of red distress flares being fired a mile off Eastbourne Pier.

The volunteer ILB crew were paged to investigate after a cloud of black smoke was seen coming from a small speedboat.

Once on scene they found the speedboat had suffered engine failure and was drifting on the tide. The lone occupant had no other means of summoning assistance, so fired the distress flares.

The disabled vessel was taken under tow to Sovereign Harbour where it was passed to the marina workboat.
